The hospital has just started providing the service to patients and staff less than a year after Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said that free Wi-Fi should be made available in all NHS buildings in England.
The Trust is confident that patients are going to benefit from the free WiFi to use their personal devices such as smartphones to keep in touch with their family or friends via email and social media.

WiFi SPARK delivered the WiFi service in record time, with only 10 days between the order being placed by the Trust, and the first patients to use the service.
In the first days, over 1,100 patients were using the service simultaneously. Darren Atkins, Associate Director of ICT at Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust, said: "We're certain that patients will welcome this service because it seems that virtually everyone these days accesses the internet.”
Tracy Scriven, Director for Healthcare- UK commented. “The team at Colchester wanted to get a WiFi solution in place very quickly. They set us the challenge to deliver an engaging WiFi service for patients in the hospital, complete with a branded user engagement portal, bandwidth control management and content filtering. The expertise of WiFi SPARK in Healthcare meant that we were perfectly placed to deliver exactly what they required.”
By working collaboratively, WiFi SPARK and Colchester Hospital were able to deliver free patient WiFi in record time!
